The article is devoted to the history of Soviet Slavic studies in 1941– 1947, the role of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the development of Slavic studies, and contributions of outstanding scientists, such as academicians N. S. Derzhavin, B. D. Grekov, V. I. Picheta and others, to the development of methodology and organization of studies on the history and culture of the Slavic peoples. Due to these scientists’ efforts historical studies became the main direction in the field of Slavic studies. The article deals with the activity of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in elaborating the strategy of development of the humanities and the plans of scientific works of the Department of History and Philosophy of the Academy in 1946–1947. Among the urgent and most pressing tasks was the creation of the Institute of Slavic Studies. The process of its creation required coordination on political, scientific, organizational and personnel issues with the Secretariat of the Central Committee and the Politburo of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks. The result of this complex work was the foundation of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1946. The Institute began its work the following year. The unique archival material on this problem is published as an appendix to the article for the first time.
