Abstract

The article examines the activities of the Russian intelligence network within the radical democratic camp of Polish émigrés. These circles worked closely with the “Red” faction of insurgents who were preparing an armed uprising in the territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth then under the rule of the Russian Empire. A primary focus of this study is the elucidation of specific intelligence operations executed under the auspices of Julian Bałaszewicz-Potocki, a prominent agent of the Russian political police in the 1860s and 1870s. Bałaszewicz-Potocki’s primary objective was to incite discord among various factions of Polish radicals and their Russian allies. It is argued that the well-known conflict between Ludwik Mierosławski, a leader of the Polish radical democratic emigration, and the Russian revolutionary Mikhail Bakunin may have resulted not only from a single deception or political disagreement but from a complex series of long-term psychological operations conducted by Bałaszewicz-Potocki. The study further suggests that the arrest of “Red” faction emissaries by the French police in December 1862—while they were procuring weapons for the forthcoming rebellion—may have been a collaborative effort between Bałaszewicz-Potocki and Russian embassy agents in Paris. It is concluded that during this period, the Russian political police possessed a comprehensive understanding of the power dynamics within the radical democratic camp of the Polish emigration. Utilizing this intelligence, the Russian authorities were able to partially disrupt cooperation between the opponents of Russian autocracy on the eve of the January Uprising.
